1800's Mappin Brothers Butterfly Ivy Etched Biscuit Warmer, Staniforth’s Patent
1800's Mappin Brothers Butterfly Ivy Etched Biscuit Warmer, Staniforth’s Patent
This is a fantastic Victorian Mappin Brothers silver-plated biscuit warmer (c. 1870–1890). A beautiful example of early Mappin work, complete with their sun hallmark that predates the Mappin & Webb era. It features Staniforth’s patented warming mechanism, which was considered quite the clever invention at the time—lift the handle and the engraved panels open gracefully to keep biscuits warm at the table. These mechanical warmers were a little moment of theater on Victorian breakfast and tea tables, and they’re incredibly collectible today.
The details on this one are especially lovely: branch-style legs, wreath handles, and Ivy-leaf engraving that tie perfectly into the Victorian love of nature and festive gatherings. It operates smoothly, displays beautifully.
Excellent antique condition and a rare find.
