Antique 1906 Handball Trophy, Britannia Plate

This antique trophy has such a strong presence and a great sense of history behind it. It is a classic handled presentation cup on a tall pedestal base, with a nicely shaped bowl and elegant proportions.

It appears to be Britannia plate, which is a thin layer of silver over a Britannia metal base (an alloy of tin). Unlike heavier silverplate, Britannia plate develops a soft, muted finish over time and typically will not polish back to a bright shine. What you’re seeing here—the darker tone and variation in color—is characteristic of the material and part of its look.

There is visible surface wear, scratching, and areas of loss to the finish, consistent with age and use.

Trophies like this are increasingly desirable, especially with detailed inscriptions and early dates. This one makes a striking decorative piece on a shelf, desk, or in a collection of historic objects.
