Antique Egyptian Revival Silverplate Hinged Box – Barbour Silverplate Co.

This antique hinged box is such a striking example of Egyptian Revival design. It was made by Barbour Silverplate Company. The craftsmanship and detail are wonderful.

All around the edges and across the top you’ll find classic Egyptian motifs, including pyramids and stylized decorative borders. During the Victorian era, there was a real fascination with Egyptian culture. After Napoleon’s campaigns in Egypt in the early 1800s and later archaeological discoveries, Europe and America became captivated by Egyptian art, architecture, and symbolism. That enthusiasm carried into decorative arts, and pieces like this reflect that period’s love of exotic, ancient-inspired design. I think it is very cool to find these Egyptian Revival Designs. I once sold an antique teapot that featured Cleopatra's head! Besides that teapot, this is the only other Egyptian Revival piece I have found.

This box is in very good antique condition. There are a couple of areas with slight denting and some wear to the interior, consistent with age and use. It measures 6" long x 4.5" wide x 3" tall. A wonderful and unusual antique with strong presence and historical design influence.
