Antique English Silver Plate Biscuit Holder, Aesthetic Movement, Double Hinged
Antique English Silver Plate Biscuit Holder, Aesthetic Movement, Double Hinged
This antique silver plate biscuit holder is such a striking piece. It has a beautiful rounded form with fluted sides, raised on an ornate frame with branch-like detailing and a decorative handle across the top. The double-hinged doors open outward to reveal a pierced interior, designed to hold biscuits or small breads while allowing air circulation.
The design leans toward the Aesthetic Movement of the late 1800's, where natural forms and lighter, more artistic elements began to replace heavier Victorian styles. You can see that influence in the flowing structure and the more organic feel of the frame.
It measures approximately 8” wide by 10” tall, giving it a really nice presence.
The underside is marked “Silver Plate on Copper – Made in England,” indicating a higher quality construction with a copper base beneath the silver plating. Pieces like this were made to be both functional and decorative, often used as part of a formal tea service.
There has been a repair made to the piece, and there is a small gap where the two doors meet when closed, so it does not function exactly as originally intended. Because of this, it is best suited as a display piece rather than for regular use. This has been reflected in the pricing.
There is also general wear to the silverplate consistent with age.
A beautiful and sculptural antique piece that still makes a strong statement, especially styled on a table or sideboard.
