Antique Victorian Basket

A beautiful antique Victorian silverplate basket with very intricate pierced work throughout the bowl and pedestal base. The openwork design is filled with flowing vines and florals, and the tall swing handle has lovely sculptural detailing that gives the piece a lot of presence.

The underside is marked Wilcox Silver Plate Co., U.S.A. Wilcox was one of the well-known American silverplate manufacturers of the late 19th century. The company operated in Meriden, Connecticut, which was a major center of American silver production. Wilcox pieces were known for their quality and decorative piercing, and many of their designs date to the late Victorian period, roughly the 1880s–1890s. The company later became part of the International Silver Company when many of the Meriden makers consolidated in the early 1900s.

Baskets like this were used on the table for fruit, nuts, or sweets and were often brought out during dessert service. 11" x 14" tall. Excellent antique condition.
