Highly Prized Antique William Hutton & Sons Sheffield Silverplate Egg Coddler

This is such a special antique piece! An English silverplate egg coddler made by the highly regarded William Hutton & Sons of Sheffield. It is marked with the firm’s distinctive crossed arrows and pattern number 13045 and dates to the early 1900s.

These wonderful old egg coddlers were designed to prepare and serve eggs right at the breakfast table, with a spirit lamp tucked underneath to keep the water heated. I love finding pieces like this that are not only beautiful, but give us such a fun glimpse into how an elegant table would have been set more than 100 years ago.

The design is fantastic, with the covered silverplate vessel elevated above the beautifully detailed burner base. Especially wonderful is that it still retains its original decorative burner holder and snuffer—pieces that are so often separated from these antique coddlers over the years. The interior spirit-lamp reservoir itself is missing, so the burner is decorative and is no longer functional.

William Hutton & Sons was a well-known English silver and silverplate maker, and their more unusual serving pieces are especially fun to collect. The crossed-arrow mark seen on this piece was used by William Hutton & Sons after the firm acquired Creswick & Co. in the early 1900s.

There is age-appropriate wear to the silverplate, but overall it presents beautifully. Such an interesting piece for a collector of antique silver, and honestly just gorgeous displayed on a sideboard, breakfast table or in a silver collection.
