This is a very special and highly collectible example of "Old Sheffield Plate"—an early 1800s inkwell stand that remains complete with all of its original components. Pieces like this are increasingly difficult to find intact, especially with all elements still together.

The form is a rectangular tray set on four feet, with a raised pen tray running across the front. It features three wells—two for ink and one central lidded compartment, often used for pounce, sand, or wafers. The outer wells retain their original cut glass inserts with lids, and the central compartment has its lid with a ring handle still in place. There is also a pen rest with a small handle, completing the set.

Old Sheffield Plate should not be confused with later “Sheffield plate” markings. This was an early and labor-intensive process developed in the mid-1700s, most often attributed to Thomas Boulsover. Sheets of copper were fused with a layer of sterling silver, then rolled and worked by hand. Unlike later electroplating, this created a bonded material that wears in a very distinctive way over time.

This example shows the qualities collectors look for: a rolled edge where the silver was wrapped over the copper core, visible seams from hand assembly, and areas where the warm tone of the copper shows through. These details reflect both its authenticity and its age.

Examples of Old Sheffield Plate are held in major collections, including Colonial Williamsburg, as important representations of early metalworking.

There is expected wear consistent with age, including areas of copper showing through and surface wear to the silverplate, but it has been well cared for and presents beautifully.

Measures 9.75" x 7".
