Fabulous Find! Victorian Epergne
Fabulous Find! Victorian Epergne
This Victorian epergne exudes regal charm, featuring an angelic putti standing centrally holding a tall trumpet vase, with arms on either side supporting bowls, all resting atop a wide base with four feet. It would have adorned the dining rooms of grand estates in its time, adding an exquisite touch to lavish settings. Made in the late 1890's by Standard Silver Co. in Toronto Canada, it stands at 2 feet wide by 21.5 inches tall. Due to its age, there is some wear to the silverplate, particularly on the left bowl and legs, this piece is truly breathtaking and a remarkable discovery. This same piece sells for $2800 on first dibs!
The epergne, originating from France and first popularized in the 17th century, is a splendid example of decorative tableware. Initially designed as a centerpiece for grand dining occasions, it evolved into an elaborate vessel adorned with intricate designs, featuring multiple branches or arms to efficiently hold fruit, flowers, or sweets. These ornate pieces became symbols of wealth and sophistication, gracing the tables of aristocratic households across Europe. The term "epergne," derived from the French word "épargner," meaning "to save" or "to spare," reflects its practical role in economizing table space while adding opulence to dining presentations. These centerpieces efficiently organized and showcased items in a vertical arrangement, allowing for more efficient use of space during elaborate feasts and banquets, contributing to their enduring popularity and artistic evolution throughout history.
