Exceptional Victorian Silver-Plated Cheese Dish, England, Circa 1890

This is the kind of piece that makes an antiques lover’s heart skip a beat. A truly exceptional Victorian English silver-plated cheese dish, crafted circa 1890, it’s remarkable both for its presence and its beautiful, sculptural form. The domed lid is richly detailed with intricate floral decoration and pierced work that feels almost lace-like in metal, and lifting the lid reveals a matching tray framed in the same elegant motif, resting on four charming bun feet. The detail is called repousse where someone would hand hammer the design in from the back. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are simply fabulous.

Pieces like this are highly unique and increasingly difficult to find, and I’ve never come across another example quite like it in my years of sourcing.
