I recently sold an incredible large Old Sheffield Plate chafing dish, that felt like a once-in-a-lifetime find and I am shocked beyond belief to have found another one1  This is truly one of the most historic and remarkable pieces I’ve ever had the privilege of offering! A 3-piece chafing dish crafted in the renowned "Old Sheffield Plate" technique from the 1700s, this piece is a testament to the ingenuity and artistry of its time.

Old Sheffield Plate was invented in 1742 by Sheffield cutler Thomas Boulsover, who discovered the process of fusing thin sheets of sterling silver to copper to create a durable and elegant silver product. This chafing dish showcases classic rolled edges—one of the hallmarks of authentic Old Sheffield Plate—and bears many signs of being handcrafted by a skilled artisan.

Lift the lid to reveal a deep serving area, and the entire tureen sits in a large bottom resovoir. Measuring 14" x 11.5"x 11" and in excellent condition, this piece is not only a functional serving piece but also a significant artifact of silvermaking history.

A rare opportunity to own a museum-worthy example of 18th or early 19th century craftsmanship, this chafing dish is perfect for collectors, historians, or anyone who appreciates the beauty and innovation of early silverplate.
