Historic British Military Presentation Rolling Dome Server, Victorian Era
Historic British Military Presentation Rolling Dome Server, Victorian Era
This is an amazing historical specimen. This rolling dome server bears a fascinating Victorian-era presentation engraving from the 2nd Battalion of the 10th Regiment of Foot (later the Lincolnshire Regiment), a British Army unit with active service throughout the 1800s, including postings in India and the British Isles. Pieces like this were traditionally commissioned by fellow officers to mark significant life events, such as a marriage, especially when a regiment was stationed abroad and camaraderie ran deep. The engraving to Captain and Mrs. Glen places this firmly in the mid- to late 1800's century and transforms the piece from decorative silverplate into a tangible artifact of British military and social history.
Apart from the history, this is just a simply gorgeous server! The lid rolls completely back to reveal a removable insert with a very special pierced fleur de lis design. There are four legs with amazing details! Each leg has hooves that extend up into a face. Review the photos to see all of the spectacular details including the beaded edge
Another thing that makes this piece so special is that I am including with it a handmade glass fruit topper made specifically to fit this piece. I have never seen anything like it! Absolutely fantastic. I don't know how you will be able to decide to display it open showing the fruit or with the lid closed! 16"x12"x8"
