Very Special 1700's/early 1800's "Old Sheffield Plate" Serving Dish
Wow this is very valuable. A famed "old sheffield plate" serving dish from the 1700's - early 1800's. Fantastic! Old Sheffield Plate refers to the earliest form of silver plating, developed in Sheffield, England around 1743, long before modern electroplating. It was made by fusing a thin sheet of sterling silver to a copper core using heat and pressure, then shaping the metal by hand into finished objects. Because the silver and copper were physically bonded, these pieces aged beautifully, often revealing a warm copper glow at edges and high points, and today Old Sheffield Plate is especially prized for its craftsmanship, early date, and distinctive character that cannot be replicated by later methods. This dish has the telltale signs such as the beautiful copper peeking through, the rolled silver edges, and the seams where the sheets of sterling and copper were hand fused together. Wonderful historical piece. 13" x 7" wide
